Deck Repair
Grand Haven, MI

You’re probably looking for a deck repair contractor because you have a deck with discolorations, stains, or splinters needing restoration. If that’s the case, then you’ve come to the right place. Most of our clients who call looking for a deck repair have no clue if their deck can be simply repaired or needs to be replaced. Obviously, you’d hope your deck can just be touched up for a few hundred bucks, but that’s not always the case.

That’s for two main reasons:

  1. Your deck is so old and tattered by the rain, snow, cold, and onset of mold and rot that the wood is not salvageable and the foundation and boards need to be demoed and rebuilt.
  2. Your deck really isn’t that old, but it was built by a poor craftsman who cut corners and failed to put the proper protections in place.

Either way, Lakeshore Decks can help you come to the decision that makes the most sense for your goals.

Things To Look Out For When Repairing A Deck

Reinforcing deck boards is important if they’re rotten and start to fall through. The first step is to take out the rotten deck boards. On the last deck we replaced, the deck boards were so rotten that we couldn’t even get the crowbar in to remove the nails! We never really know what kind of damage we’ll find under a deck, so we have to do things slow and incrementally.

After removing the boards, we’ll also check the foundation wood to see if that’s rotting too.

We’ll then take some rough measurements of the deck once we’ve determined what we need so we don’t have to make multiple trips to our supplier to get the right-sized wood.

As we’re replacing boards, we have to make sure we fill gaps with some 100% silicone sealant to prevent water from infiltrating between the boards. This can help protect original boards and old ones as well.

We also make sure we have a small spacing between each deck board for draining to prevent water pooling on the boards. We do this by placing a spacer between each board (a nail works) to create adequate space.

If we’re repairing a pressure-treated wood deck, we’ll treat the old and new wood with an oil-based stain to give the deck more life.

3. Nobody is more experienced at building outdoor living spaces for the whole family.

Can A Deck Really Be Repaired?

The idea of replacing the entire deck seems daunting. Especially when you consider how expensive it was when you first had it built. You start doing some calculations in your head for a replacement and its substantially more than what you originally paid. Not to mention having your yard torn up from the process of demolishing the old deck structure, ripping out the support posts and concrete footers. And unfortunately, the wood rot, splinters, and mold growth on parts of the deck make it a poor candidate for a simple deck clean and seal. So… what are you going to do?

Here’s the deal…

What we’ve found is that if you spot problems in your deck and hire a professional like us to fix them, we can often times rectify and add new life to your deck instead of having to demo it completely. We’ve been able to add 10-15 years of life to a new deck at times by replacing a few deck boards.

If you’re embarresed by the way your deck looks and want to just be able to entertain guests during the spring and summer months, then you’re in luck because Lakeshore Decks can help you. After securing materials, we can build a small deck in less than a week and repairs can be handled in the same amount of time. Spring is fastly approaching so don’t delay in calling for a free estimate.
